| History of the American Chestnut The American chestnut tree was an essential component of the entire eastern US ecosystem. A late-flowering, reliable, and productive tree, unaffected by seasonal frosts, it was the single most important food source for a wide variety of wildlife from bears to birds. Rural communities depended upon the annual nut harvest as a cash crop to feed livestock. The chestnut lumber industry was a major sector of rural economies. Chestnut wood is straight-grained and easily worked, lightweight and highly rot-resistant, making it ideal for fence posts, railroad ties, barn beams and log home construction, as well as for fine furniture and musical instruments. The blight, imported to the US on Asian chestnut trees, is incited by a fungus dispersed via spores in the air, raindrops or animals. This fungus wiped out the entire Chestnut population by the mid 1930's. Now many years later these rare and difficult to find structures have been located on one farm near Concord, Virginia. Considered a log cabin connoisseurs dream come true, Heartland Restorations is pleased to offer these rare structures for public sale. |

2- American Chestnut Barns 26'x22' 16 ft tall with 8-12 inch faces. (Lee Farm Concord, Virginia) These barns have large faces (8-12) inches, all of American chestnut. The barn is a full two stories with 16 foot walls. V notches, two corners I consider in good condition, two needs refitting. Suggestion would be to add another cabin (Chestnut A) to this building making it a dogtrot design (two-crib, full two stories) with a central fireplace to warm each side. It would require the purchase of the other sister barn (Chestnut A) that is next to it, in width it is the same size. Setting them together with a central fireplace would make these cabins "one of a kind" and a most impressive structure. Completed it would measure over 56 feet long with a 6-8 foot central fireplace. |
