Montpelier Restoration Project

This year the American nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of its greatest founders, James Madison. The celebration starts at Montpelier on Madison's birthday, March 16, 2001, and continues through much of the calendar year. We hope you'll mark the anniversary by visiting Montpelier anytime in 2001, and enjoy the new exhibits in the Mansion, the special tours of the Mansion and the estate, and the newly-opened network of trails and on-site parking. These features and exhibits make the presence of James Madison more tangible and make his lifelong estate more accessible and fun than ever!

James Madison's nation-building career spanned 40 years. In his early 20s, he organized volunteers in Orange County for the American Revolution, and quickly moved on to the Virginia legislature and the Continental Congress. In his 30s, he earned the title "Father of the Constitution" for his leadership at the Constitutional Convention. When Madison retired to Montpelier at age 66, after serving as a Congressman, Secretary of State, and fourth U.S. President, he could truly know that the great American experiment in democratic government was a success - and that few individuals had done as much to ensure its creation and nurture its first steps.
