This cabin was built around 1870 by George
Gilmore near the site of James Madison's home Montpelier. George was a slave
of James & Dolly Madison. George's father was believed to be one of
the carpenters who help build Madison's home. The George Gilmore cabin is
currently being restored by Heartland Restorations to be open to the public this
summer. A building that can tell the story of a man and his family,
from the period of slavery to tenancy to ownership, an important period of
African American history in the Commonwealth of Virginia. More

Restored by Heartland in 1997
-98 this structure is the oldest building in Culpeper County. Listed
with the Landmarks Resister of Virginia, Maple Springs is regarded
by historic preservationists as a rare surviving example of an early yeoman
Piedmont Farm.
